CETCI Pedagogy After Hours with Jessie Merlo In-Person

When introducing new skills, students often need modeling to better understand course expectations. You could find an old YouTube video example, try to model it yourself, or attempt to get a student to volunteer as an example.  However, we believe we have developed a better way!  With the help of Pacific University’s Media Arts and Production Services and funding from a TARGET grant, we created our own videos to show examples of a variety of skills in our pharmacy skills and application course.  Because we made these videos ourselves, we could highlight common student mistakes and better direct the classroom conversation. We were also able to have students evaluate the skills performed on the video using course rubrics.  This allowed for a better understanding of grading expectations and improved accuracy of self-evaluation.  Though our focus so far has been on physical assessment (blood pressure), patient education, and working with clinical preceptors, video examples can be used in many different courses.  If you need to show an example, making your own video is a great solution, and it might even be simpler than you think!
